Merit System

All students begin the year with 20 merits and are expected to remain in good standing by having no more than five demerits per quarter. Demerits are given for tardies, missed materials, misbehavior, not reporting to the office after an absence, etc. Merits and the reasons for demerits are recorded in INow and available to view on the parent portal. Those who fall below the minimum number are asked to work one hour for each demerit. Merit work needs to be verified on the proper form by:

Timing in and out of the work period using the time-clock outside the KYL office and Obtaining the signature of the staff person responsible for the completed work.

It is important for students to earn merits back in the work program by the end of each quarter. Being in good standing with merits is necessary in order to participate in various activities including field trips, inaugurals, ditch day, etc.

Students who average no more than one demerit per quarter earn the privilege of attending ditch day in June, even though they did not have perfect attendance.

Students who received 10 demerits during a quarter (even though they are earned back through the merit work program) are placed on merit probation. Students who are placed on probation twice during the school year are automatically reviewed to see if they may continue in the school.

MERITS MAY BE EARNED THROUGH THE WORK PROGRAM BUT STUDENTS WHO ALLOW THEIR MERITS TO GET TO ZERO MAY BE DISMISSED FROM THE SCHOOL.
